Dermatology

Dermatology is meant to explain, diagnose, treat non-contagious and contagious (infectious) skin diseases and care after patients with dermatitis. It is a medical specialty that includes both, the study of therapeutic treatment and of the surgery. A dermatologist takes care of skin diseases in the broadest sense, and also of the aesthetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails. Along with venereology, dermatology covers also venereal diseases (which are sexually transmitted).

The most common dermatological conditions

  • Atopic dermatitis. Known as eczema, atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease, which takes the form of dry port and causes intense itching. Because of scratching, often occur edema (swelling) and redness. In advanced stages, the skin cracks and secrete fluid. When the wound heals, a scaly crust occurs in the affected region.
  • Rash. Small red bumps, accompanied by itching, are called a rash. Typically, the condition occurs in response to a food or drug allergy. Stress or other infections are common causes of the rash, which usually disappear by it selves.
  • The acne. World Medical statistics show that 80% of patients presenting to the dermatologist, are suffering from mild or chronic acne. Even if it is the most common skin disease, the acne is not life threatening.
  • Rosacea. Characterized by a permanent redness of the skin, rosacea occurs mainly in women. As the disease progresses, reddish pigment highlights very small blood vessels that become visible (especially the cheeks). Topical drugs and oral antibiotics are typically used as a treatment.
  • Moles. When they are small and regular in shape, they are considered sympathetic. Even so, moles are classified as dermatological pathologies that occur when certain skin cells (melanocytes) develop grouped tissue around them. Everyone has between 10 and 40 moles and a person in 10 has a mole changing in its appearance, that it is likely to turn into melanoma (a severe type of skin cancer). In this situation, medical advice is crucial.
